About: Our Mission

Brief History of LPHS

The first Chinese School in Tacloban City was founded in 1919 by a group of local Chinese businessmen such as the Leyte Tek Club and the Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

The Leyte Chinese School was officially registered at the Department of Education in 1921. It started its classes in an old building with two (2) classrooms. There were but a few enrollees mostly coming from the young boys and girls of the Leyte Filipino-Chinese community.

Five (5) years later, the first school building was constructed.  However, three (3) years after, the school was closed due to financial constraints. At this juncture, the Chinese community decided to organize an Education Committee to revive the school. This philanthropic gesture paved the way for more enrollees, thus, the Leyte Chinese School was transferred to a new building at Gran Capitan Street (now Justice Romualdez Street), Tacloban City.

When World War II broke out in 1941, the Leyte Chinese School was temporarily closed and reopened in 1945 after the war. Although renovations were made in the old building, the Chinese community decided to construct a new building at Sabang District, Tacloban City (where the school is now situated). The first Graduation Rites was held in the new location.

In 1973, the school name Leyte Chinese School was renamed Leyte Progressive High School to effect a Government Circular requiring all Chinese Schools in the country to be Filipinized.

Through the concerted efforts of the concerned, generous, and literacy-oriented Board of Trustees, Alumni Members, and some benevolent Chinese businessmen, Leyte Progressive High School became a recipient of laboratory facilities, library, computer facilities, the gymnasium and other school facilities.

Honestly from the beginning of the school year 2020 'til now 2021, I thought online classes are not working. The kids will get bored and it will not work out. Now, I am very happy, satisfied, overwhelmed, impressed as well as very thankful of Leyte Progressive High School for the job well done.

If this coming school year 2021 LPHS offered online class, we will still we enroll our child for grade 7.
Thank You Sir Marvin, Teacher's in English Studies as well as our Siansi/Teachers in Chinese Studies Siansi Helen and Siansi Delson.
